Introducing Unsigned Artists with Currys PC World

by zoe @ Zoe London

Photography: George J Rockett / Edit: Zoe London THIS POST IS SPONSORED BY CURRYS PC WORLD. Meet the Bose SoundLink Revolve Speaker at Currys PC World and my unsigned Summer picks! I was absolutely stoked when Currys PC World got in touch asking if i’d like to be a part of their latest Summer ad campaign, and now i’m excited for you all to see it as pre-roll YouTube ads and on Facebook! It was so much fun to shoot at my house no less, and I really got to grips with discovering the latest portable speaker by Bose. I’ve featured some speakers on here before, and as you know i’m a DJ as well as avid music lover, so whenever a new music gadget comes into my life – i’m curious. It’s called the Bose SoundLink Revolve, and it’s a portable speaker with loads of great functions. Currys PC World immediately spotted that it was going to be the tech must-have of the Summer, so I bring you some snaps of how it can work at a casual picnic and the full deets! Let’s meet this nifty little gadget! The Bose SoundLink Revolve speaker isn’t much bigger than my hand as you can see, meaning it’s perfect for sticking in your bag or case to take on the go with you. It holds a really impressive battery life of up to 20 hours, meaning you can take it to a festival or picnic/garden party and it’s not gonna die on you. Brill. It’s super easy to use with the buttons on the top controlling the music, which is playing via Bluetooth from your phone or device. You can connect two devices at the same time, meaning you can swap who controls the music! The best thing in my opinion however, is that it’s water resistant, so you can use it by the pool or even by the bathtub for a lazy podcast bath evening. Awesome. Anyway, onto my top unsigned acts for Summer! So I actually recommended three great unsigned acts for the ad and i’d love to share them with you today. Let’s start with beautiful heartfelt pop-rock from the gorge Emma Blackery. You may remember her songs from the past, but they’ve had a revamp for 2017 with the release of her brilliant new EP, Magnetised. It’s beautiful Summer tunes and you’ll love it. Up next is the atmospheric indie soul of Slowlights, a five piece band from London, UK. Their debut EP was released only Friday, and you’ll feel so chilled and transported to a sunny place listening to them. Highly recommend you give them a listen. For something a bit different, check out Normandie, a Swedish rock band with synths in all the right places. I’m absolutely hooked on their latest single, entitled ‘Ghost’, and I think you’ll like it too. So there we go, that’s all the lowdown on the latest music must-have gadget, as well as some new tunes to listen to on it too. Epic! Cheers Curry PC World, this speaker has already made it into my favourite items for the Summer list and George is smitten with it! The sound quality is really incredible.

Nail Polish Wiki

OPI is a popular, professional nail polish brand based in California. Origionally named Odontorium Products Inc., OPI was a dental supply company when it was purchased by George Schaffer in 1981. Lust For Life

by zoe @ Zoe London

Photography: George J Rockett Words & Edit: Zoe London We’re built to always bounce back. Ugh, have you ever felt like you lost all motivation completely and all you can do is slug out on the sofa? Yup, me too. Actually, that was me just a couple of weeks ago. But i’ve bounced back and every single time I do, I feel renewed, refreshed, revitalised. I can never explain what causes it, but I really think there deeply is always something within us that makes us always bounce back and makes us remember why we’re here, and why we do what we do. It’s really natural and really really normal to feel low, and sad, and the more we talk about these points in our lives as well as the happier times, the more normal within society it will become. I really feel like we’re on the edge of a shift with attitude toward mental health. Something is definitely changing at the moment, more and more campaigns are being launched and more musicians, artists, celebrities are opening up and talking about the tough points we all go through. Suicide is still the biggest killer of men in our country and we can all do more to prevent this going forward. I spent some time at the weekend talking to musicians on the Reading Festival lineup, and every time I get the opportunity to talk to them, I always want to delve a little deeper than just scraping what’s on the skin of the album. I want to talk about them. Slowly but surely more men are talking to their friends, their families and their loved ones about the issues they face (and the women of course) and these musicians can elevate themselves up onto a platform to encourage more to be done. Using their voice, their influence and just giving others the comfort in knowing they are not alone is so powerful. I think being a YouTuber is tricky on your mental health in a way people don’t realise. You know that horrible sinking feeling you get when you read one of your friends bitching about you on Facebook, or sending a sly shady tweet aimed at you? Imagine opening your comment box, logging in to twitter to hit notifications or opening your emails to find a flurry of hatred like that, every single day. That’s the reality for a lot of our YouTubers and I often find myself concerned for the lack of mental health help available. It’s worrying that the new generation of creators online just seem to get younger and younger, and aren’t taught about how living a life online and reaching incredible heights of fame, money and success at the age of 14 for example isn’t realistic. Not only is it dealing with the comedown of it crashing down in later years, but knowing they are being opened up to a flurry of online abuse is something I think we should all be mindful of. I don’t think for a minute the same people reading this blog are the same ones leaving nasty comments on videos, so that part of this isn’t aimed at you, but I think we’re all a little guilty of passively consuming media, or sitting and watching dramas unfold without actually sticking up for those who are on the receiving end. There’s definitely a witch hunt mentality that puts a lot of creators in a tricky place of losing motivation, and we could all do a little better to be kinder online. My mental health took a battering, but I found my passion again. I know for some people depression and sadness within their mental health is an ongoing battle to face, and I can’t talk much from experience because while of course I dip my toes into this arena i’ve never fully felt that way. I struggle with chronic illness which is absolutely debilitating and takes me to a horrible place every time it renders my body useless, but I do manage to pick myself back up out of it. A lust for life. I know we all have it, but for some people it’s a little harder to find. Let me talk you through ways I help dig mine back out when I feel the dark cloud approaching over my head. I think the easiest thing is to focus straight away on your hobbies. Even when you feel so desperately sad, painting, drawing, writing, reading, blogging, YouTubing, sewing… fishing… I mean whatever your hobby is, that moment of clarity even if it’s just an hour or two away from the bed or the slug sofa can really lift you both mentally and physically. I find a quick photography session or just enveloping my mind into new ideas for videos really helps me. I also find time away from social media very therapeutic, and while resigned to my bed when the illness kicked in i’m limited on what I can do, switching my phone off (actually I just let it die) and watching my favourite TV show (Ugly Betty) for me constituted a good day. A happy day. Not every day has to be the biggest and best ever to be a happy day. I think together we need to reach out to our favourite creators. Working from home, for yourself and in an industry where every bit of you is critiqued, as well as spending all day looking at yourself isn’t normal. From the outside, your favourite creator might seem like they have it all together, all packaged up in a lovely glossy edited photograph. Behind the scenes it may be a different story. Spread a little love, radiate positive energy, ask them how they are when you see them at conventions/gigs and reach out to them like you would a friend. We all have a lust for life in there, sometimes it just takes a little more digging on some days more than others. […]

New Blog!

by noreply@blogger.com (Krissy) @ Painted On

Hello! I'm Krissy. I created this blog to have my tiny space in this huge world of beauty blogs to talk about my obsession with makeup and nail polish and share my photos and experiences through it all

It's also easier to keep track of all of my favorite blogs when I have one of my own. I really struggled with naming this blog. I love the name I have; however the actual address to my blog had to be different since some jerk created a blog 4 years ago, made one post and never touched it again. Now that means I can't have it!?! I'm hoping one day it will be mine. :)

Like there aren't enough blogs about nail polish and makeup out there I've decided to create my own, and hopefully someone out there will appreciate what I do; like I feel about other bloggers.

I plan on showing my swatches of all of my polishes, makeup and maybe some hauls. That is if my camera behaves and I have time between work and fun time to see the sunshine to take photographs.:)

I'm not sure what else to write here for my first post but would like to say (not in a bitchy way) that this is my blog and I am entitled to my own opinions and if you don't like it then you can go somewhere else.

Going Back To Glasses

by zoe @ Zoe London

Photography & Edit: Juliette Carton / Words: Zoe London I don’t have a good relationship with glasses. I remember the crushing feeling of being something like twelve/thirteen years old, already with a mouth full of braces, when the optician told me my eyes had worsened. Ugh, I thought. This meant one thing only: I needed glasses. Typical that I was still early in at secondary school, already filled with dread and anxiety at the new life ahead of me, worried already that I was too tall, too skinny, not right to fit in with the other kids. The cool kids. They would already think I was a dork, with all my braces and that, surely i’d never be accepted with glasses too? I hated it and I used to take them off when I didn’t need to at school, opting to walk around the corridors semi-blind rather than wear them and actually see. Teenage life is cruel, huh. Luckily the emo phase saved my fear of glasses. When Emo kicked off along with MySpace and I was more like fifteen years old, I suddenly didn’t feel so bad about my glasses anymore. My braces had just come off, and I’d managed to persuade mum that I needed new glasses (“no, really mum, I neeeeed them!”) and off we trotted down to the local opticians, where I was able to pick a pair of large black rimmed glasses. Perfect. Suddenly, at least for a while, glasses were cool again in the eyes of teenage me and I was happy to wear them. Flash forward five ish years of wearing them pretty much to death before I inevitably switched to contact lenses and never looked back. Until now. These are from the Kylie x Specsavers range. A few months ago Specsavers contacted me asking if I wanted to style up some of their latest frames for some instagram photos, and well, I thought “why not?” Having worn contact lenses relentlessly for about eight years or so eventually takes a toll on your eyes and it turned out they had taken a toll on mine. I’d been so bad at leaving them in for long days and nights, and i’m slowly but surely making my eyes really dry and increasing in prescription. Not good. I was advised to switch from contact lenses when I get home from being out, instead of sitting in them until they eventually went dry and began to hurt anyway. So with that in mind, I picked two different styles to wear over on instagram, and well, of course they quickly became part of my life. This was an ad project, and it’s definitely made a positive impact on my life. I do anyway only accept ad work that is stuff I genuinely believe in, but I felt while this one was connected to my eye health – it needed a follow up. Glasses are totally cool now. It’s tough when you’re a kid and you’re told that one thing isn’t right, and you desperately want to fit in. That wonderful freedom of growing older and realising you don’t really care what anyone thinks anymore, is so validating and free that you realise it actually is cooler to not care, and to just be you. I think there’s such a stigma attached to glasses that they aren’t cool, when these Kylie frames prove otherwise. I’ve totally fallen in love with wearing them, and i’m so happy they are in my life! Let me know what you think in the comments about my new glasses, and whether you had the same traumatising glasses childhood as me – trust me we can totally get over it and get back to glasses! By the way, this isn’t an ad i’m not disclosing, the two instagram posts were ads, but I felt this needed a follow up post as it was something important!

bourjois' dupe for o.p.i teenage dream - Zoe London

bourjois' dupe for o.p.i teenage dream - Zoe London

Zoe London

Bourjois Rainbow Apparition Nail Enamel and O.P.I Teenage Dream Teenage Dream from the Katy Perry collection for O.P.I was one of the most sought after O.P.I polishes from 2011. It’s easy to see why, it’s baby pink jelly texture with multi-coloured sparkly glitter appealed to young girls and magpies alike. Step forward a year later and there’s finally a high street alternative in the shape of this soon to be released polish by French favourites Bourjois. It’s at a purse friendly price and is basically a perfect duplicate. Hurrah! As with all duplicates nothing is ever quite 100% the same and Rainbow Apparition is different in as far as I can see, just two ways. Let’s take a closer look: top: bourjois rainbow apparition | bottom: opi teenage dream So Teenage Dream is a baby pink as I mentioned earlier, but Rainbow Apparition is more of a soft purple. It’s not the world’s biggest difference though, and is only noticeable when pulled out on white paper. The only other difference is that Teenage Dream has the finest tiny glitter in the jelly whereas Rainbow Apparition is slightly thicker and stands out more. The overall effect is that Teenage Dream is a sparkly base with big glitter chunks, and Rainbow Apparition has multi-dimensional glitter throughout. These are two tiny little factors though and overall it’s look, texture and final effect is basically exactly the same as the O.P.I. If you have Teenage Dream and are wondering if you need this, i’d say probably not, but for most of us who found Teenage Dream just too expensive to part cash with or genuinely couldn’t get hold of, i’d say this needs to sit firmly on your radar. And hey, all good things come to those who wait eh! A couple of things to note about the Bourjois polish that I like. Number one is that I love the handle! I own a couple of these 1 Seconde polishes already and I love how easy they are to apply when holding the long handle. They also have a fab wide brush that makes application so easy to get neatly, especially near the cuticles and the base of the nail. I know they’re a tiny touch more expensive than lots of nail favourites but I think these little details make it worth it completely. The newer formulation promises to be more gel like in texture too and I think they are great, with fantastic coverage and quality. Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel in Rainbow Apparition will retail at £5.99 from June 2012 so bookmark it now if you’re after a little Teenage Dream fix! What do you think of Rainbow Apparition? Did you cave and buy Teenage Dream the first time or are you secretly glad you saved your dollar? Are you thrilled there’s an upcoming dupe or are you so over it? Love, Zozo x Disclaimer: The Bourjois polish featured was a PR sample given to me free for consideration and the O.P.I Teenage Dream was a gift.

Dear Lacqueristas,

Let's face it, there's only so many Scrangies, Polishaddicts and Chloe's in this world. There's tons of other nail blogs that I love and frequent, and there's a million of others that are pretty good as well. But it's getting more and more the same and my blog is stuck in that too. The same press releases, the same collections beeing reviewed, the same you know. Ofcourse it's helpfull to see many different swatches of one particular collection when your making up your mind what to get and yeah I appreciate the reviews on formula etc. But it doesn't happen a lot that I stumble onto a blog that makes me think, wow now this is really really cool!

I'm beeing honest, when I started blogging poor naive me somehow dared to have the ambition to grow this blog into something *unique*. Looking back at that ambition I can only smile and shrug. It's just impossible to stand out amongst all these great blogs! During my three month blogging break I realized I do not just miss posting, but I want to do more then just that. I also want to do something.... together! With you guys!

For a couple of months now I have a Nail polish Collection Database that a couple of GREAT girls from MUA maintain and that inspired me to investigate of some kind of community blog would be interesting. I'm not sure how it would look like but I have some ideas that might be fun.

I know there's some great swatchers out there that don't have time to start and maintain their own blog. Then this project would be for you.
Just some random thought on what topics the blog/website could cover;

  • All there swatchers with their unique skin tone would swatch the exact same polish for a particular post. It would be easy for readers to see how this particular polish would look on a skin tone similar to their own.
  • Or to have bloggers with diverse interest and talent, maybe someone that is great at free handed nail art, another one would be a Franken-queen and we would also have a layering expert.
  • Maybe we can have a blog that only reviews one particular brand. Or only swapping. Only high-end brands. Everything but pink. Whatever!
  • To have a blog or website in a never seen before layout
  • To transfer the nail polish community database to a real website, and to build it as a proper database with all the polishes beeing swatched

You get the point. I think I'm just playing with the idea to *initiate* something fun in this nail polish blogging world. If you want to collaborate or share your ideas, that would be awesome. It's easy, just enter your thought in this form. Or post a comment.

Hasta la vista, Laqueristas!

With IP.Content articles and custom databases you can mirror a topic to the forums when a new article or database record is submitted. In doing so, IP.Content can also utilize that automatically-generated topic as the comment "storage" for the article or record. When a comment is submitted to the article, the comment is actually stored as a reply to the topic. Similarly, replies made directly to the topic in the forum also show up as comments for the record.

This functionality can be enabled at a per-database and per-category level. You can specify separate forums for each category in your article section, for instance, or you can turn off forum commenting for a specific category, while enabling it for all others.

A few additional configuration options, such as allowing you to automatically remove the topic when the record is removed, and specifying a prefix and/or suffix for the topic title so that your users can more easily identify that such topics were stemmed from the articles section help round out the feature, giving you better control over how these automatically posted topics are handled.

The forum cross-posting capabilities allow the administrator to better tie in articles with the forums, giving you better opportunities to expose your content to a wider audience. Additionally, forum management of comments provides for easier maintenance and stronger managerial options of the comments, utilizing IP.Board's powerful, proven feature set.

Welcome to another edition of Throwback Thursday! I haven’t done one of these posts in a while so for all of you who are new to my blog (first off, welcome!) this post is stolen from the hast…

Flower Power

by Karianne @ Neglelakkmani

Tulips in Holland

by Amanda @ Kevin & Amanda

While we were in Belgium, Stephanie and I took a day trip to The Netherlands to see the tulips. We were there at the perfect time — late April — peak season for tulips. We definitely didn’t want to miss the opportunity! I’ve always dreamed of seeing the tulips in Holland. Taking the train was a […]

Although I was quite sad to see my leopard mani go (it actually hadn’t chipped much at all!), I was anxious to try something new on my nails. OPI’s Teenage Dream was part of Katy Perry’s 2011 collection. I was lucky enough to buy it gently used from a facebook group. Let’s take a look! …

Download Festival 2017

by zoe @ Zoe London

Photography: George J Rockett & Zoe London / Edit: Zoe London Another June has almost passed us and that means it’s been another Download Festival. June is always a happy and exciting time for those in the rock community as it signals the start of festival season, with one of my all time favourites: Download Festival. I first went to Download when I was 15, so I have so much love for that hallowed Donington turf, and it’s always such a pleasure to go back. With a real mixed lineup on the bill and some epic headliner sets, George and I packed our bags and headed back to Derby with excitement. Mostly because George is notoriously famous for making a ridiculously incredible Download drive CD. No, really! Let’s start with the weekends weather. Honestly the weather at last year’s Download was so terrible it almost made me cry at one point. It was knee high mud, with no end in sight. Thankfully good karma came Download’s way and we had a totally dry year! YES! Look how many people stuck in their wellies the whole time though, ever the optimistic British, prepared for all weather right! Ha. We were so happy and everyone was in such good spirits, I know it’s nothing that can be helped living in England, but good weather days really bring out the best in everyone. The whole festival went off without a single hitch, and i’d honestly say hand on heart it was one of my favourite Download Festivals ever. So who did we see, then? Friday saw us arriving in the mid afternoon, and with a right rocky ol’ start as I realised I had left most of my life at home. Dear me. However we headed in to watch Four Year Strong, who played a great set. To be honest I don’t know much of their stuff, but George is a big fan, and I really enjoyed the energy in the tent. They had a really fun vibe about them and it was a joy to watch. Unfortunately after that we then had to head back offsite again to go try and do something about my lost contact lenses (such a fail) and we made it back in for System of a Down on the main stage. I feel like i’d waited my whole life to see SOAD, and it was high energy from the get go. Those guys have totally and utterly still got it, and brought the biggest dance party i’ve probably ever seen in the main stage crowd. They played all the hits; Toxicity, Chop Suey, Sugar, Bounce, B.Y.O.B, Question…. need I go on! I was reminded just how many hits they had. So gutted they didn’t play Shimmy, though!! Saturday weather and vibes were even better than the day before. Honestly after all the stress of Friday I was glad to see Saturday morning sunshine. Our day started with a bit of Pierce The Veil on the main stage, who are always good fun. The last time we saw them was at their own headline show, and the crowd was so young it kinda ruined it for me. In the festival atmosphere of the family and mixed Download crowd – it was better. I really like a lot of their tunes, and they sounded great. We then caught The One Hundred doing a secret smaller set on this tiny little stage, and it was my first time seeing them live too. They’re a really unusual genre of nu-metal meets rap rock, and I was impressed! The drummer Joe, used to be in a band with George (and also Hannah from Creeper!) so it was really nice for George to catch up with him and also get to see his new band. Speaking of George, he’d been waiting patiently all day for the highlight of his weekend, which just so happened to be Every Time I Die. I was a fan of ETID before I met George, but his love for them is really infectious and the passion has rubbed off on me, so I knew a lot more songs than I would have previously. There’s not many words you can use to easily describe an Every Time I Die set, so i’m just gonna go with: outrageous. They really should be on your list of bands to see live if they weren’t already! Biffy Fuckin’ Clyro. Ah man I just ADORE Biffy. I think i’ve seen them probably about 15 times in my lifetime, from tiny tiny shows in London, to a random show in a leisure centre (really) to a 200 cap venue in Switzerland, I love those Scottish lads. They have evolved brilliantly over time, making their music more accessible for all without losing that Biffy sparkle. It’s great to hear them played on Radio One, and what a huge victory for them to be headlining Download. I know there’s been so many chats as of late about new headliners for Download, a traditionally ‘old’ headliner festival, always looking for bands of the classic ire, but in my opinion Biffy are perfect to step up and take that slot for a young band. We have to look to the Download of the future and Biffy proved they could do it. With a firework display second to none, and an incredible setlist, even including Jaggy Snake, to me they sounded great. There were a few problems at the start during Living Is A Problem… and the crowd really wasn’t remotely big enough for what it should be – although they were up against Download favourite Rob Zombie at the same time – but in my opinion they did a great job, and they showed Download the young (by Download standards young) talent we have in the UK at the moment. We didn’t photograph my outfit on day one but here’s what I wore. I love outfit planning for Download because I can express the inner me a bit […]
