Candles For Cosy Evenings.

by Kate @ KATE LA VIE

I think if I was left to my own devices, I’d happily blow all my money on candles. One trip to Anthropologie has me weak at the knees, and my obsession with all things Diptyque has seen every surface in our living room covered in pretty jars! Now the evenings are darker and colder, my candle obsession has almost taken over. There’s naked flames everywhere! I have at least one candle burning in the evening as I huddle under a blanket to watch some top British TV (Doctor Foster though!! Gripping stuff.) I think Jo Malone is the best place to start if you’re after more of a luxe candle. These are some of my favourites because the scent really throws and they burn so evenly. I’ve never had an issue with these tunnelling, and I love the glass jars too – they make the perfect makeup brush pots once cleaned out. I adore Lime Basil & Mandarin as an all year round pick, or my current obsession from the new collection is perfect for autumn. English Oak & Redcurrant is a dream to burn on chilly evenings! I seem to have a couple of Diptyque candles on rotation, I’m […]

A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Organic Food

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Looking Underneath the Organic Food Market The organic food sector is growing. Many studies and their findings show that our conventional food is contaminated with chemicals and herbicides, and that contamination leads to diseases, tumors, mental illnesses and major chronic problems. Organically grown crops are not just better for our health but for the quality of the soil that provides the nutrients to our food.   What Is Considered Organic? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program has strict guidelines for becoming certified as an organic producer. Basically, produce grown without using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or ionizing radiation can be certified as organic. In animal products, the meat, dairy and eggs are produced without using growth hormones or antibiotics. Also taken into consideration are the protection of natural resources, biodiversity conservation and only using approved substances. This means a lot of testing for adherence to the guidelines, not to mention checking soil, water, contamination from neighboring fields and constant monitoring to approve products and get that seal from the USDA.   Is Organic Food Safer and More Nutritious? The Mayo Clinic confirms that evidence continues to show the potential benefits to health of organic compared to conventionally grown foods. Moderate increases in nutrients, higher levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, lower toxic cadmium levels in grains and lower levels of residue from pesticides are some of the noticeable differences that contribute to overall health. Without additives, preservatives and GMOs, it stands to reason that food grown organically is safer, but the difference in nutritional value is very difficult to prove. Too many variables affecting nutrients in seeds, harvesting, handling and type of soil make research unreliable. However, peer-reviewed journals are finding higher nutritional values. An example in one study shows organic tomatoes having higher levels of phytochemicals and vitamin C than conventionally grown ones. It doesn’t mean organic labelling is healthy eating. Additives to so-called organic items like snacks, cakes and pre-packaged food can be detrimental to our health. Read the labels.   Why Does Organic Food Cost More? Due to the time-intensive processes that smaller organic farms use and the diligent care that is needed, prices are typically higher. Federal subsidies are not given to organic farmers as they are to large, conventional farms. Environmental cleanup, that sometimes takes years, isn’t reflected in conventional growing. Also, the stringent guidelines, checked often, takes more management. There are ways to get organic food and stick to a budget. The larger stores are starting to stock more and that brings the prices down. Things like breads, cereals and grains that are labeled organic are relatively the same price as conventional. Shopping around, cooking more at home and buying frozen or in bulk can save money as well. Another option becoming popular are low carb meal plans. Boxes of organic produce are specifically made up for a particular meal containing all the ingredients so no shopping is needed.   What’s So Good About Organic? It’s not just about the food we eat. The most overlooked topic is underneath the food we grow. The soil has been over-processed and isn’t given time to build up nutrients. The chemicals used to kill weeds and bugs goes into the soil and into the food we eat. The wind carries these sprays into other fields and contaminates perfectly healthy soil. Animal welfare is important for a delicious, bacteria and hormone-free piece of meat or fish. Caring for the environment and making crops sustainable will provide sustenance for our future generations.   Providing for our children and their children should be a priority. Helping sustain the small farmer who is doing everything he/she can to grow healthier, tastier and more organic food seems like a dream. The more demand for quality produce, the lower the prices. All these things contribute to viewing organic produce as the better alternative.

#nzgirlhacks: 5 Common Food Traps For Your Health, From Dr Libby

by Lidya @ nzgirl

Spring cleaning your house and life? Why not spring clean your health with Dr Libby as well! Australasia’s leading nutritional biochemist Dr Libby tells us what the top 5 things people do that damage their attempts to be healthy. Plus, win tickets to see Dr Libby in real life and a copy of her best-selling book What Am I Supposed To Eat?. Just comment below which food trap you fall into the most!   Five common food traps that lead us away from good health 1. Inhaling your food So many people inhale their food these days, whether they’re eating on the run, in a rush to get back to their to-do list, or simply distracted (ever eaten an entire packet of crisps in front of the TV without even noticing?). We need to slow down and chew our food properly – there are no teeth beyond the mouth! Aside from breaking down our food, chewing sends a signal to the stomach that food is on its way, allowing it to prepare for optimal digestion. 2. Thinking you can burn off poor food choices No amount of exercise can burn off the effects of a poor-quality way of eating. I have met thousands of people who exercise frequently (and with intensity), especially after making poor food choices with the intention of ‘burning off’ the calories they consumed the day before. But the calorie equation (calories in versus calories burned) doesn’t take into account the biochemical and hormonal effects of our food choices. There is nothing in the world that can replace a highly nutritious way of eating. 3. Drinking water with meals For the most effective digestion, we need the pH of our stomach acid to sit at around 2. Water has a pH of 7 (neutral) or greater so drinking water with your meal has the potential to dilute the stomach acid. If the stomach isn’t acidic enough, you may not be able to extract all of the nutrients from your food optimally and you may also experience digestive symptoms such as bloating. Drink water between meals rather than with your meals. 4. Listening to external sources rather than your own body With so many nutrition experts sharing information and the rise of social media ‘influencers’, we are exposed to so many (often conflicting!) messages about what to eat and what not to eat. Experts play a role – of course. Yet, when you look for answers externally and take someone else’s well-meaning, but possibly inaccurate nutrition advice as gospel, you are essentially disregarding your own inner wisdom. I have seen this time and time again with people continuing to eat foods they have been told are “healthy”, despite their body sending them clear signals that these foods aren’t right for them. I’m not for a second denying that many people would benefit from nutrition education and guidance, but at the end of the day, know that your body is your best barometer when it comes to what best nourishes you. 5. Using unhelpful food language Food isn’t ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘healthy’, ‘unhealthy’ or ‘clean’. It is nutritious – or not. Humans are healthy, or they aren’t. And the more nutritious food we eat, the healthier we will be. When we talk about food in terms of nourishment, we look at what we’re getting from our food and how it’s feeding our cells. It’s an entirely different conversation and helps to establish a great relationship with food. Dr Libby just released her new book, What Am I Supposed to Eat? and is will be bringing her live event Food Frustration to 17 centres around New Zealand. Comment below which food trap you fall into the most and you might be one of 3 winners of a copy of What Am I Supposed to Eat? and a double passes to see Dr Libby LIVE! Winners will drawn September 16th so tell your friends! #nzgirlhacks

A Dewy Skin Duo.

by Kate @ KATE LA VIE

There’s something about dewy, supple skin that I can’t get enough of; I feel like I’m constantly chasing a glowing complexion! Luckily for me, one of my favourite skincare brands have released two products that have made a huge difference to the overall look of my skin – and I just had to share the details with you! The new Fresh Vitamin Nectar range aims to improve luminosity by awakening the skin and giving the complexion that beautiful fresh-faced look, thanks to the vitamin-packed formula and the addition of glucosyl hesperidin, an ingredient that is found naturally in citrus fruits. When added in to skincare, it helps to combat tired, lacklustre skin – aka everything I need in a product, ever. The Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask is my go-to product right now, although it is a lot like smearing marmalade on yourself! Smells great, though. I love this as it gently exfoliates, so it’s something I can use quite regularly when I feel like my skin needs a pick me up. I like to spend a few minutes gently massaging it in to my face, before leaving it on whilst I wait for my bath to run. Upon removing, […]

Introducing… Herbivore Skincare.

by Kate @ KATE LA VIE

Meet my current skincare obsession; Hebivore Botanicals! An all-natural, non-toxic skincare brand from a husband and wife duo based in Seattle. Their bright, swoon-worthy packaging caught my eye, but the impressive lineup combined with the fact that I’m yet to try a product from the brand that isn’t 100% amazing is what’s keeping me stocking up! I first tried a soap of theirs on my first trip the US a couple of summers ago, and ever since I’ve been determined to hunt down more from the brand! They’re not easily found here in the UK – some smaller indie stores seem to stock them and I know Trouva has quite a good selection. They have a store locator here too. I treated myself to three new additions when I was in LA recently and they’re all gorgeous, allow me to introduce… Coco Rose Coconut Oil Body Polish; I love love love a body polish, so I just knew this was going to be a favourite of mine. And the dreamy blush colour too, of course. What a pretty product! This softening scrub combines deeply nourishing coconut oil with floral Moroccan Rose so skin is supple and scented after every use. READ WATCH LISTEN: The Changeover Is The Perfect Coming-Of-Age Movie

by Lidya @ nzgirl

The best way I would describe The Changeover is a coming-of-age arthouse supernatural fantasy thriller-ish movie. A lot of words, but it is only because there are so many layers to the film. Sixteen year-old Laura Chant lives with her mother and four-year-old brother Jacko on the edge of earthquake-scarred Christchurch, New Zealand. Laura is drawn into a supernatural battle with an ancient spirit who attacks Jacko and slowly drains the life out of him. Laura discovers her true identity and the supernatural ability within her, and must harness it to save her brother's life. It captivated me straight from the start. The first scene (shown below) perfectly captured the awkwardness of wanting to be a carefree child but having the responsibilities of an adult. New Zealanders and co-producers Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie chose to set the movie in post-quake Christchurch. To me, post-quake Christchurch reflected what was going in in Laura’s world. She was trying to deal with the disaster of her father leaving and the responsibility of taking care of Jacko while trying to be a normal teenager. And of course, with teenagers, there has to be some sort of parental conflict. Melanie Lynskey plays Laura’s mum, an over-worked bookshop employee who often neglects her maternal duties. Tension between the mother-daughter duo reminded me of my arguments with my mother, with the similar lines of ‘Where were you? Who are you texting?’ and my old favourite line ‘You don’t listen to me’. Oh those angst years! Oh man. My goodness. I swear Timothy Spall just has a special talent for playing the creepy villain! There was the right amount of nail-biting and face covering and don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! The person next to me told me after the movie that she knew exactly when the jumps were coming by the number of times I cursed under my breath (which is hilarious!). But the movie can’t be classified as a horror film. The person on the other side of me was a 13 year old girl and she was not scared. At all. To be honest, I’m not great with horror/thrillers, but I would not suggest bring children under age 13 with you. Now let’s talk about romance, because there is major chemistry between Laura and Sorenson. Sorenson gave me a very strong vibe that reminded me of Edward from Twilight. Kinda awkward, wanting to help, slightly dark with a good heart. Of course, the physical similarities help too! If you have read the Carnegie-medal classic by Margaret Mahy that the film is based on, don’t expect it to be exactly the same. While the book hasn’t aged and still has relevant themes to modern life, the producers wanted to really appeal to teenagers now.  The Changeover will make you laugh, will definitely make you cry. It is a must-see. Out in cinemas September 28th in a cinema near you.

A Day In Santa Monica.

by Kate @ KATE LA VIE

Last month we stopped over in Los Angeles on our way back from New Zealand, to catch some sun and to make the journey a little easier! I had visited LA for the first time the year before, but Jordan had never been to California before so I was keen for him to see it. One of our first days there was spent wandering from Venice to Santa Monica and back, it was a warm day but we really needed some sun after winter in New Zealand and I was so keen for a big walk and some photo opportunities! We started the day at Eggslut, a little brunch spot in Venice that specialises in quick eggy bites – think McDonalds breakfast muffins but one trillion times better. I had a scrambled egg, crispy bacon, cheese and chilli jam combo in the most delicious, warm bun with freshly squeezed OJ on the side. Oh my god it was unreal, you absolutely must find a way to go. I was very keen for some exercise (because I was starting to feel a liiiiittle bit guilty after that brekkie), so we started to make our way to Santa Monica. I love this […]

#nzgirlhacks: Why You Need Life Insurance

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Saving money for your family means going over the expenses, your income, and every financial detail of your life with a fine-tooth comb. It’s not easy, and it’s probably going to cause you a little anxiety as you delve into places your money is going, how much you waste, and how much you need to save for the future. When you go over your expenses and decide it’s time to save money, don’t be like the thousands of people who assume they’re fine dropping their life insurance policies. It’s unwise, and financial experts advise against forgoing life insurance.   You Need Life Insurance You do need life insurance if you have a family. If something happens to you and your income is lost, can your family survive? If you are the primary breadwinner in the family, you must carry life insurance. Even if you don’t bring in any money for your family, you do provide a role. Do you have kids? If you stay home with them so your family doesn’t pay for school, daycare, after-school care, or babysitters while you work, you’re saving your family a lot of money every month. If something happened to you, who would care for your kids while your spouse is at work? Can your spouse afford to send your kids to school or daycare or camp while he or she works? You might not provide financial income to the family, but you do provide very important financial help to the family despite not receiving a paycheck every other week or so. Financial experts also remind consumers it’s not easy to get a good life insurance policy the older you good. If you decide to drop the policy you’ve carried for years, you’re never getting it back. The next one you get might be far more expensive, far less beneficial, and nothing like the one you have now. It’s easier to get good insurance for a good rate when you’re young and healthy. Are you still young and healthy? Think about that when you decide you’re saving money by ditching your life insurance policy. How to Save Money on Life Insurance If you really need to cut the bills in half or more, you need to consider a bundled policy. Get online or start making calls for car insurance quotes that also bundle your home and life insurance policies. Bundle discounts are available for those who choose to carry all their policies in the same place, and that’s a big saving each year. Additionally, if you make the decision to pay your premium upfront rather than monthly, you save a monthly fee as well as an automatic payment fee, and you get a discount for being a good customer. Talk to your insurance agent about the many ways you can save money on your insurance. Many of them are surprising, but that doesn’t mean they’re unwelcome. Savings are nice, and sometimes all you have to do is ask about it. You can compare insurance quotes until you find the policy that best fits your needs and your financial situation, and that’s how you save. You might find your current company is desperate to keep you, and they’ll offer more substantial discounts if they feel you might leave. Life insurance is the way your family survives when you are gone. It’s the kind of subject you never want to discuss, but it’s the kind of subject you must discuss. You can’t avoid this topic of conversation, and you certainly don’t want your family strapped financially and potentially change their entire lifestyle as they are dealing with losing you. Protect yourself and your family with a good life insurance policy. You need it, and your family needs it. It seems like a waste since you’re not really using it, but it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Don’t cancel it no matter how badly you need to save money.   #nzgirlhacks

Driving Freedom: How to Save Money on That Next Car Purchase

by Damien Justus @ nzgirl

Buying a car is a major, financial commitment for most people. You might be driving a car that’s a decade old or more right now. It’s time for a change, but the purchasing process is intimidating. In today’s car industry, there are many options that make the purchasing process easier than ever. Learn some of the insider secrets to scoring a spectacular deal on the car of your dreams. Simple tips can drive the price downward in a matter of minutes.   Try Online Sales Walking onto a dealership’s lot isn’t necessary today when you have the Internet to supplement your purchasing process. Save money on your next car by looking for deals online. Many dealerships will list certain cars that have been on the lot for several months. They want to move their inventory so the price is incredibly low. Print out this sale or save it to your smartphone. Bring it to the dealership so that you can see the vehicle in person. Because the price is set at an incredibly low level, there’s very little haggling that’s necessary.   Consider an Alternative Color If you look at the cars on the road today, white and black vehicles tend to dominate the world. These popular colors are well-known to dealerships so they set the prices high as a result. Alternative colors, such as blue or brown, don’t move as quickly from the lot as the everyday hues. Dealerships are more willing to give you a deal on these vehicles so be open to the varied colors. Settle on a low price that only encourages you to drive a unique car.   Shop Late Car salespeople are constantly looking at the bottom line. There are sales goals for each weekday and month. Consider a visit to the dealer near the end of the day on the 31st of the month. Because the dealer wants to make a deal to finish off the month with a healthy profit, the salesperson is more open to negotiation. Ask if there are any promotions that sweeten the deal during negotiations too, such as floor mats, an e cigarette starter kit, or maybe an Ipad. Some of the most unusual requests become part of the final sale as closing time nears.   Skip the Superfluous Extras It’s a fact that dealers will try to sell you numerous extras as the final papers are being signed. Avoid the addition of extended warranties and sealants. They’re simply not cost effective in the long run. Your factory warranty covers most of the issues that you’ll face in the coming years. The factory paint job is also high quality so sealing it is only a cosmetic choice. Avoiding the extras will save hundreds of dollars at the signing table.   Get Pre-Approved A simple way to save money on a car is by beating them at their own financial game. Go to your bank and get pre-approved for a car loan. Be aware of the loan amount and interest rate. When it comes time to talk about financing, you have a starting point for the negotiations. In most cases, the dealership wants your financing business so they’ll match the pre-approved amount.   Avoid Monthly Payment Amounts As you haggle over the vehicle’s price, don’t discuss monthly payments. This tactic is a classic way to confuse the consumer. Discuss the car’s total price or drive-off amount. Negotiate off of this price so that there’s no confusion over costs. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for as a result of these negotiation tactics.   Always remember that you haven’t committed to any purchase until the documents are signed. Don’t feel obligated to complete a sale. If the process isn’t in your favor, you have every right to walk out of the door. Car salespeople will work on your psychology, but you don’t have to give in. You dictate the terms on your next purchase. Stay strong, and a good deal will present itself in time.

Waxing 101: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

by Trang Nguyen @ Nails 360

Waxing 101: Tips and Tricks for Beginners Steve Mason/Getty In the last several years, waxing has become a common (and popular) service offered at salons and spas. Whether it’s the eyebrow, upper lip, armpit or, well, someplace more intimate, many people choose waxing for longer-lasting hair removal. But to those who’ve never done it (or […]

Before Your First Brazilian or Bikini Wax

by Trang Nguyen @ Nails 360

TMI time: this weekend, I got my first Brazilian wax ever. Actually, it was my first wax ever, period. I was lucky enough to be born with eyebrows that require zero maintenance and I’ve never been very, uh, hairy anywhere. I’ve stuck with shaving my whole life, but here’s the thing: I absolutely HATE shaving […]

The Perfect Essie Duo. - KATE LA VIE

The Perfect Essie Duo. - KATE LA VIE

KATE LA VIE

My Essie obsession is showing no signs of slowing down – not with this dreamy combo around anyway. I have a lot of love for Essie polishes, I just don’t use anything else! I thought I would take a minute to introduce you to two shades you absolutely must own… When it comes to nails, I’m more of a autumn/winter person – I love rich, antique golds, dark inky blues, beautiful maroons and dark cerise hues and tend to forego the summery shades bar a few weeks in July. My all-time favourite colour combo consists of Essie Sole Mate Polish (£7.99) with Essie Summit of Style on the accent finger. I used to layer up that delightful chunky gold glitter over the rich tones of Sole Mate, but now I tend to just stick with the gold and really coat it on so it’s a full on glitter-fest. Gorgeous. The result is wearable, slightly gothic but with a mesmerising, feminine twist thanks to the glitter. You really can’t go wrong with such a pretty duo. Have you got either of these in your stash?

The End

by noreply@blogger.com (Jessie Mills) @ Nailed It NZ

Five and a half years ago, Nailed It NZ begun. What started as a hobby grew quickly into a passion; one that I believed would never die. I daydreamed about where I would take it, and adamantly stated that I'd still be painting cartoon characters on my nails in my retirement. Every new follower was a thrill - and then I started getting things to review! It went from strength to strength, and I was blown away as my followers went from ten to 10,000, to where it is now at a combined following of over 200,000. I trained as a nail technician. I won competitions, met celebrities, threw myself off the Auckland Harbour Bridge on live radio. I've met friends for life, developed a brush and file line... and that takes me to where I am now.

While summed up in a quick paragraph, it all sounds great; but in reality I've spent five years of weekends and late nights cooped up in whatever space I've allowed for my nail art. It always had to come first, and when you allow 4-6 hours for filming, 4-8 hours for editing and several more hours for promotion, there isn't a lot of weekend left. Often I'd finally complete my to-do list, and triumphantly announce that my weekend has now begun... only to realise it was now 5pm on a Sunday. It took me a long time to settle into Auckland, with a key factor being that my recreational time was limited.

And the funny thing is, despite all this, I was fine. The passion for nails withheld so much! I could write a book on everything I experienced and the good and bad sides of humanity I saw along the way - but the love of nail art remained strong.

Until, it didn't.

I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I know the last few months have been a real confirmation of it. I kept trying to reinvigorate it, thinking it was just a phase; but the reality is that I'm just not that interested in nail art any more.

It's not coincidental that this coincides with the growth of my "normal" career. I'm an early childhood teacher, and for the last year I've been fortunate to be in an amazing job with inspiring leaders and a strong career path. I love going to work, I love being around people, laughing, having fun, planning the future, developing my professional and personal skills. I love the kids I work with, and my colleagues are pretty amazing as well. Sitting at home, alone, editing video after video, blog post after blog post no longer has any appeal to me.

The funny thing is, I always thought I'd be upset when I eventually wrapped this up, but I'm not at all. My husband and I are about to embark on a whole new chapter of our lives; making big life decisions and facing new challenges, and I don't want to start them clinging on to old dreams. It's time for new ones.

This means that I'll no longer be updating Nailed It NZ on any platform, and my shop will shut on Thursday the 28th September 2017 at 11.59pm. All of my accounts on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc will still stay active, and of course can still be used to help you out for ideas and techniques.

I hope this isn't too much of a let down for those amazing people who have been so supportive for such a long time. Believe me, I will never forget your names; your kind words and love of my work really made a difference. But all good things come to an end - or else how can we make room for the great things?

I'm going all-out for a short closing down sale - everything is 50% off at shopnaileditnz.com. The last day for ordering is Thursday 28 September (remember, I'm in New Zealand), and I'll be canceling my shop subscription at the end of the month. If you really want some brushes or files at a later date, you can email me - use my naileditnztutorials@gmail.com one - the other one I'll probably get redirected as it has a cost associated with it.

Again, thank you. I'm so happy I went on this journey and it's taught me so much. I can't wait to see what the next chapter in my life brings.

Jessie

READ WATCH LISTEN: 5 Ways To Spot A Mean Girl

by Lidya @ nzgirl

Do you remember the mean girl from high school? You know the one, she takes every opportunity to lower your self-esteem and she doesn’t even pretend she’s not enjoying it? Classic teen movies are full of these iconic characters; from Regina George in Mean Girls, to Easy A and The Princess Diaries. Now, New Zealand has a mean girl to call our very own with J’ess from awkward high school comedy Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose! Meet Lucy Lewis. Her high school has officially gone weird. When an anonymous Instagrammer hits Hills High all hell breaks loose, and Lucy must battle mean girls, unfair rules and the super scary Principal.   This time, poor Lucy Lewis (Thomasin McKenzie) has to deal with the worst slash best mean girl ever, J’ess (Erana James, who is also starring in upcoming movie The Changeover!). J’ess throws shade, rocks the eighties Goth queen look and is the new standard in which to measure a girl’s meanness. Here are some mean-girl spotting tips Lucy could have done with! 1. Mean girls always have a strong look. Note the eyeliner, the bold berry lips and the perfect resting b***ch face? It’s important to remember, mean girls only every smile on the inside. 2. Her name is as distinctive as her make-up choices. 3. Her deadpan sarcasm knows no bounds. 4. She knows gives a backhanded compliment like a flippin’ pro. 5. And finally, mean girls call it as they see it. We loved the previous season of Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose and season 2 is giving us major throwback vibes to our high school days (whether we enjoyed it or not)! Watch the new series of Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose here, and see Erana James (looking totally different) in The Changeover in cinemas Thursday September 28th! READ WATCH LISTEN

5 Reasons You Should Eat Kind This October (And Forever)

by Bridie @ nzgirl

In partnership with SAFE’s Eat Kind month in October Bridie Chetwin-Kelly our resident vegan talks us through the reasons why eating kind is awesome. More often than not people tend to think that being vegetarian or vegan is about eating tofu and kale and calling it a day. That’s not all you’re doing. Eating kind is about saving the environment, animals, your health and eating like you give a damn. 5 Reasons Why Eating Kind is Awesome  The health benefits People who eat kind are actually on to something when it comes to health. With the right diet and understanding what vital nutrients your body needs to survive, you could be the ideal picture of health. By removing animal products from diets, you are reducing your risk of having heart disease and cancer As for dairy, the lactose in milk can cause some serious discomfort and leafy greens, broccoli and beans are far better sources to get calcium. Save the planet, one plate at a time The numbers are in and a number of resources used to farm agriculture is completely destroying the planet. In the time it takes you to read this 4 football fields of a forest is being cleared for farming. Our clean green image in New Zealand is at risk of animal effluent making our water toxic and contaminated. Not to mention what effects farming releases large amounts of emissions and has a significant impact on climate change. You could save a life or a hundred Would you still be able to eat meat if slaughterhouses had windows? By going meat-free you could save over 96 animals a year or up to 198 animals a year if you go vegan.. Normalising eating cruelty-free is what Eat Kind is about and by removing the questions around it we can begin to accept it as a new normal. What’s the difference between a dog and a cow? It’s just plain pretty to eat plant-based Just look up vegan on Instagram and you will see just how beautiful the food looks. New Zealand has come a really long way with being vegetarian and vegan-friendly as well. If you are at a loss or think it’s going to be difficult to go out and eat, you couldn’t be more wrong. Thanks to Happycow.net you can look up your area and go to tried and tested restaurants and cafes. I can hand on heart say that I have been to countless vegan-friendly places across the entirety of New Zealand. Portershed in Christchurch, Botanist in Wellington and The Burgerie in Auckland are only a couple of examples!  The Burgerie also now boasts the best vegan burger in the whole of New Zealand. Check out @Veganeaaats and @Accidentallyvegannz for even more unbelievable vegan food! My office buddies sure know how to throw a send off with a (tasty) bang 💘🎉 Gorgeous #vegan raspberry and coconut cake from @thecaker for my goodbye morning tea. Those flowers tho 😱👏🏻 A post shared by @accidentallyvegannz on Jul 20, 2017 at 1:29pm PDT Education around this has been made easy The education around this hot issue has never been easier and a number of documentaries out there are ever growing. I recommend, Earthlings for a sombre and heart-breaking look into what and how animals are used and abused. Be warned, it will break you… Cowspiracy has been deemed the shocking film that environmental organisations don’t want you to see. It’s about what is actually going to be sustainable for our planet. Lastly, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood is about educating people on the topic of climate change with a big focus on agricultural farming and the pace in which humans consume meat. Bonus, you get to look at Leo for a full movie. SAFE is encouraging people to at the very least, give it a go for the month of October and has plenty of resources on their website to make the transition an easy one. Save the planet, save the animals and give compassionate eating a go. READ, WATCH, LISTEN
